    Goodbye Sweet Sophia

Our beautiful schnauzer, Sophia, died today. She had cancer of the spleen and it had spread to her bladder. Though we could have extended her life by a few months through surgery and chemotherapy, it would have cost more than $4000 and her final fate would have been the same. So we chose to have her euthanized today. Now there is a big hole in my heart.

Sophia was only with us for 5 months. But she was about 11 years old. Those years were not easy for her. She came to us as a raggedy, skinny toothless Schnauzer - rescued from a rough life on the street. God curse the people who abandoned her or neglected her. Sophia spent quite a bit of time as a stray until she was picked up by animal control in Marion County, Oregon. They gave her to Schnauzer Rescue Northwest, and we adopted her back in May of this year.

When Sophie came to live with us, she proved to be remarkably independent, spending much of her time off on her own. That was quite a contrast to our other dog Amy who always wants to be close by.

We always knew Sophia would not be with us for many years, but we had hoped for more than 5 months. We didn't know she already had cancer back in May - and her days were numbered. We tried to give her a good safe home and lots of love. I think we did a good job. Because she was toothless, Gene even learned to make soft homemade dog food that was both nutritious and easy to eat without any choppers.

Sophia, I will miss your floppy ears and your crooked smile. I will miss the way you used to jump like a rabbit at meal time. I always enjoyed watching you as you explored the back yard, happy to spend a long time sniffing around in solitary pleasure. I appreciated the fact that you immediately felt at home with us - ready to defend our house from strangers walking by (even though you did it with a loud and incessant bark). Sophie, you did everything with enthusiasm - even sleeping. Never have I seen a dog sleep so deeply.

We named you Sophia because the name means wisdom. And, we thought you must be very wise, having been through so much difficulty in life. And, you reminded us of Sophia Patrillo on the Golden Girls television series too. Old, dottering, but spunky none the less. It was a beautiful name for a beautiful little girl.

Goodbye Sophia. We will always love you.

    SCUBA Dreams and Puppy Nightmares

Today I took another step toward fulfilling my long time SCUBA dream. I bought my first wet suit, as well as the other basic equipment, including: mask, fins, snorkel, gloves, and boots. In the next month I’ll buy a weight belt too. But, I’m holding off on the tank, regulator and dive computer because they cost so much. For now, I will rent that equipment whenever I dive.

When I tried on my wet suit at the dive shop, I was surprised it was so tight. I could move without major difficulty, but the form fitting nature was a new experience for me. The guy at the shop said it was a perfect fit, and I defer to his experience. I’ve never worn a full wetsuit before – especially not a 7mm suit such as those required for diving in the cold waters of Puget Sound. I did wear a 3mm shorty in Hawaii, but the one I bought today is very different. Below, you can see a picture.

My new suit is not only thick, it has two layers. First, there is the jump suit. It looks like a pair of coveralls. Then, there is the jacket – but it isn’t a regular jacket. It has leg holes too. Add the gloves, boots, and hood and I will be fully protected from cold water. The only exposed part of my body will be my lower cheeks and around my mouth as shown in the picture (it's kinda scary lookin').

Now I have the basic equipment, and I’m already studying my text book and video prior to my first test. Actual in-pool training doesn’t start until mid-November.

On a sad note: As I write this, our dog Sophia is at the veterinarian. She has been lethargic and shaking the last couple days, so we took her into the vet this morning. She would yelp sometimes when we tried picking her up. It appears that Sophia has a tumor in her abdomen. My heart just sank when the doctor said, "She has a tumor the size of a tennis ball." We don't know if it's malignant or not. We don't know if it involves the surrounding organs. We’ll know more after the ultrasound. Then we can consider options for surgery and possible treatment.

UPDATE at 3pm: I just picked Sophia up from the animal hospital. She has a tumor on her spleen. The good news is the spleen and tumor can all be removed at once. The bad news is these types of tumors are usually malignant, and there is a small swelling in her bladder, which may indicate that the cancer has already spread. So, until we can schedule surgery at a clinic next week, we need to keep her calm and quiet. There is a chance that the tumor, which has a substantial amount of fluid in it, could burst and cause internal bleeding. We are supposed to carry her up and down the stairs, doing so with extra care to not put pressure on her abdomen. Soon, Gene will bring home a pain prescription to keep Sophie calm, quiet, and relieve some of her discomfort. Interestingly, she is acting normal now. She has stopped shaking and was very happy to arrive home.

Most likely, we are looking at three or four thousand dollars for all of this surgery, treatment, and medication. And the cancer could still kill her in the future.

    Good News and Good News

Exciting news for me: I have taken a step toward fulfilling a long-time desire. In November I will earn my SCUBA open water dive license. I'm taking a course at Underwater Sports here in Seattle. I'll be able to dive on all my vacations, as well as locally in Puget Sound. I've already booked a dive for my vacation this December, and soon I'll book one for our cruise in February - perhaps in Belize. Perhaps some day I will also skydive and earn my private pilot's license (no, those two dreams are not necessarily linked!)

Next: We have awaken from the nightmare. Our townhouse has sold and the transaction has closed.

But even the sale process could not be smooth because this entire episode was cursed from the very beginning. The buyer was flaky and could not be trusted. She was acting as her own (supposedly licensed) real estate agent. Though, when there were problems, she didn't know what to do. Our agent had to take up the slack. The deal almost fell through on more than one occasion. At one point, the lender refused to approve the buyer's loan. But the buyer didn't tell anyone. Our agent finally found out the loan wasn't approved because some out of state appraiser couldn't find comparable sales on the Internet to justify our price. OH MY GOD! Since when can you appraise a home accurately on the INTERNET! Sure, there are sales prices there, but you can't see the neighborhood - and the appraiser can't see the property's view, or the quality of the construction by looking at Internet data!

Basically, we had to force the lender to hire a local appraiser. Then he found our place was actually a bargain compared to other units in the same complex that were selling for more, but had a smaller square footage.

So, yesterday on the way to work I drove by the townhouse and the new owner was moving in. It was a concrete way for me to believe, the nightmare is finally over.

BTW - in Seattle, if anyone tries to buy your home using Skyline Properties, be very wary! That real estate company is not as professional as the others. When we had problems with one of their "agents," the broker never returned our calls.

    Cruise Line Comparison

Deciding on a cruise line for my hard earned vacation dollars is not easy. But a moderate amount of experience, along with advice from other cruisers (including my sister, a TA) helped me create the comparison below.

I chose to compare Princess, HAL, and Celebrity because those were the lines I heard were most in line with my tastes and budget. As with all comparisons, this information is highly subjective - so take it for what you will.

Finally, I chose to compare only our favorite class of cabin - a mini-suite. Comparisons for other classes of cabins will vary. Thus, you will notice the scores at the bottom are very close. My partner and I have chosen to stick with Princess for three basic reasons: all around value, a consitently welcoming policy toward gay couples, as well as the best frequent cruiser program in the industry. That said, we have already tried HAL and found some things to be very impressive. I suspect the same will happen when we finally try Celebrity. Still, my assessment still rings true for us. Perhaps it will be of use for you. Perhaps not.
