    Voices Ignored

The Episcopal Church's triennial convention is now over. I offer a little background for those who don’t understand the EC convention. At its essence, it is the meeting of our governing body – the equivalent of our congress. The Prime Minister or President of our congress is the Presiding Bishop. The Episcopal Church is unique in Anglicanism because it has the most highly democratic polity. The bishops are our senate, and the elected priests and congregants are our house. It is these to bodies that work together to create church law (canons) and issue resolutions of understanding.

The headlines and network news shows that covered the convention concentrated on our election of the first female Presiding Bishop among the more than 75 million Anglicans worldwide. But also, there was a great debate within the convention about how the American branch of Anglicanism (The Episcopal Church USA) would explain it's theological foundation for ordination of gay and lesbian clergy to the Anglican Communion which includes many theologically conservative bishops in the developing world (specifically Africa, Asia, and South America). After reading many blogs about the convention, I came upon a new online video entitled Voices of Witness. It helps explain my thinking about the long running controversies within the church (which actually date back 30 years, not just 3 years).

I and perhaps most Episcopalians in the US are what some call "Incarnation" believers. In other words, we look to balance and interpret scripture with personal experience of God's creation, all around us and in a modern context. The central idea to incarnation theology is that God continues to speak to us through His creation right now, in today's world, and with today's modern scientific understanding of the universe, and not just through a book that is more than 1000 years old. And that new revelations and understandings should be incorporated into our belief system.

Many conservative believers have a problem with incarnation theology because it diminishes the role of the Bible. But I disagree on that point. I believe it actually enlivens the Bible and makes it more relevant in today’s world – especially in the developed western world where Christianity is losing adherents.

Another objection is that incarnation theology expands the moral gray area, limiting or even eliminating boundaries and absolutes. Again, I disagree. I believe this theological system only requires us to re-examine our long held beliefs, and perhaps find some beliefs that in the light of new information, are actually sinful if we retain them.

Most controversial among these beliefs are the beliefs common in many religions that women should not be priests or bishops, and that gay and lesbian people have an inherently sinful and disordered sexual orientation. That last belief has caused the most controversy lately because the Episcopal Church confirmed the elevation of its first openly gay bishop three years ago. And the world wide Anglican Communion objected, demanding an explanation for our theological foundation.

I discovered the Voices of Witness video online today. It does the best job of explaining why gay and lesbian people should have full communion with the body of believers, and full access to all sacramental rites. The video is fully incarnational, because it directly draws from human experience of God’s love and creation as it is known today. Watch it, please. It may bring new understanding to your life too.

Sadly, the recent convention was polarized by a minority of conservatives who held expulsion from the Anglican Communion as a threat over the heads of all delegates to the convention. In the end, little ground was gained for gay and lesbian people. And sadly, the conservatives are still dissatisfied and are unlikely to withdraw their threats of schism within the US and international church. Times will tell where we go from this point.

Episcopalians are a small denomination in the US. But I’m very proud of our inclusive church. We walk the talk more often than not.

    A New Travel Log Video

I just finished my first cruise travel video. The project was completed in record time - exactly one week from start to finish. I put in approximately 45 hours of work for the final product. Never mind that it took me six months to start!

The video is 25 minutes long, and a low quality version is available here, if you have Media Player 10 and Internet Explorer 6.0.

If you enjoy the video, feel free to leave a positive comment in my guestbook. If you don't like it - YOU SUCK! - but I'm not sensitive.

If you want to see a somwhat better stream quality of this video, or some of my other work - try navigating to AcidPlanet. It's an amatuer music and video website.

    Have fun!

The Dark Forces of the Culture War

The dark forces of US politics continue to spread havoc and deception. When are voters going to recognize the evil ones? Locally, I'm thinking of Tim Eyeman, and nationally, Bill Frist.

Yesterday, even conservative evangelical leaders acknowledged Eyeman cannot be trusted. Their favorite issue, hatred of gays, failed to reach the November ballot because Eyeman didn't gather the needed signatures. "We are frustrated," remarked one neo-facist Christian. Many preachers and hate-mongers want to retract the recently passed gay rights law, signed by the governor early this year. The new law takes effect today, making Washington the 17th state to enact such protection for gay and lesbian citizens.

Personally, I'm thankful Tim Eyeman was involved. His for-profit initiative machine likes to steal all the attention and press. It's all about Tim Eyeman, and not really about the issues. What better way to set a course for failure?

Now, Eyeman is promoting another intiative. It would return car tabs to $30 in King county. Never mind that the citizens in King County are the ones who chose to raise their own taxes in order to fund transit systems. We need farmers in Walla Walla telling us in Seattle how much our taxes should be?

It's about people in Spokane and Wenatchee voting to repeal taxes adopted in King County," Republican consultant Chris Vance told the Seattle Post Intelligencer. Even the Republican mainstream now loathes Eyeman. The former GOP chairman thinks Eyman is damaging "the legitimate perception of the initiative process. When you've got a clown out there in a Darth Vader suit lying to the press and things like that, it's not good for the initiative and referendum process.

Eyeman is cut from the same cloth as Senate Majority Leader Bill Facist ( I mean Frist). As usual, the Republicans want less federal government in your wallet, but more in my bedroom. The Senate's attempt to ammend the US Constitution to outlaw gay marriage in EVERY state (even those who freely choose it) failed for the second time yesterday.

According to the PI, Sens. Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell were getting more frustrated and angry. Like most Democrats -- and even some Republicans -- Murray and Cantwell have sharply criticized the Senate's Republican leadership for taking three weeks from a tight schedule to debate constitutional amendments on gay marriage and flag burning and on banning the estate tax. Even though they know these issues are all destined for failure since several Republicans refuse to tow the party line.

To all my friends and family members who voted for George Bush...this is what you get! You get a party that's controlled by fundamentalists who care nothing about deficits, war, or human rights. What they care about is my sex life AND cutting my taxes (yeah, we are in the upper 5 percent for per capita income!) You get a nation with a rising international reputation for hypocracy and a widening gap between the rich and the poor - not to mention a military that is stretched to the limit.

Is that what you wanted in 2004? I hope so - now you have got it. I told you so.

    Marriage is Unnatural

It has been more than a year since the Washington State Supreme Court heard arguments for and against our state's ban on marriage between two men and two women. It's virtually unheard of for the court to take so much time in making a decision. I've come to the conclusion they must be taking extra time because they are split on the decision and/or they have decided to rule the WA state DOMA law is unconstitutional, and therefore the legislature must come up with a remedy.

Anticipation of the court's ruling is drawing more of my attention because it has taken so long. In that spirit, I found this list at the University of Florida's Gator Gay-Straight Alliance. I think it's the perfect satirical approach to the fundamentalist view.

    1. Homosexuality is not natural, much like eyeglasses, polyester, and birth control are not natural.
    2. Heterosexual marriages are valid because they produce children. Infertile couples and old people cannot get legally married because the world needs more children.
    3. Obviously gay parents will raise gay children because straight parents only raise straight children.
    4. Straight marriage will be less meaningful, since Britney Spears's 55-hour just-for-fun marriage was meaningful.
    5. Heterosexual marriage has been around for a long time, and it hasn't changed at all: women are property, Blacks can't marry Whites, and divorce is illegal.
    6. Gay marriage should be decided by the people, not the courts, because the majority-elected legislatures, not courts, have historically protected the rights of minorities.
    7. Gay marriage is not supported by religion. In a theocracy like ours, the values of one religion are always imposed on the entire country. That's why we only have one religion in America.
    8. Gay marriage will encourage people to be gay, in the same way that hanging around tall people makes you tall.
    9. Legalizing gay marriage will open the door to all kinds of crazy behavior. People may even wish to marry their pets because a dog has legal standing and can sign a marriage license.
    10. Children can never succeed without both male and female role models at home. That's why single parents are forbidden to raise children.
    11. Gay marriage will change the foundation of society. Heterosexual marriage has been around for a long time, and we could never adapt to new social norms because we haven't adapted to cars or longer life spans.
    12. Civil unions, providing most of the same benefits as marriage with a different name are better, because a "separate but equal" institution is always constitutional. Separate schools for African-Americans worked just as well as separate marriages will for gays & lesbians.
